Excerpt from The Women of Color STEM Awards Gala

EMCEE 1

And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s story time... time for a little STEM story.

So once upon a time there was a happy family, which is how fairy tales usually start out.

But then someone has to leave the scene... which is typically what happens in this kind of story.

In this case it was the mom who drew the short straw.

EMCEE 2

Dad was a successful high-powered record exec. He traveled a lot of the time.

He had a daughter named Cissie, who he loved very much.

He remarried because he was lonely but it was clear it was on the rebound.

EMCEE 1

His new wife was a real piece of work. She was spoiled rotten but knew all the right moves and just how to reel him in.

Her two daughters were chips off the same old nasty block. From day one, they were bound and determined to make Cissie’s life miserable.

And they did.

EMCEE 2

But Cissie was nobody’s fool. She was smart, especially in math and science. And she had some female mentors in high places... which meant she was ready for whatever the stepsisters dished out.

Needless to say, their cyber-bullying was completely out of control.

But Cissie texted Irene Hernandez Roberts who was at IBM at the time.

Before you know it, the sisters were kicked off Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

EMCEE 1

But that didn’t stop their dirty tricks.

There was a big meetup at a local McMansion where your basic Handsome Hunk wanted to hook up to find a wife.

Of course the stepsisters told Cissie she couldn’t go, so they got all gussied up and left without her.

But Cissie had other plans.

EMCEE 2 First she needed a gown, and she needed it fast.

So she called her friend Suja Chandrasekaran, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Walmart Stores Inc.

Within moments an exquisite long vintage pale pink lace chiffon formal party gown arrived on her doorstep... delivered by a drone.

[PAUSE] And yes it came with killer heels.

EMCEE 1

But how was she going to get to the shindig? No big deal.

She IM’d Alicia Boler Davis, Executive VP at General Motors Global Manufacturing. In no time a self-driving car pulled up... and off she went.

You know the rest of the story.

Cissie looked drop-dead gorgeous.

The Handsome Hunk only had eyes for HER.

The clock struck midnight. She ran down the steps so fast, she lost her shoe, and headed back home.

Blah, blah, blah.

EMCEE 2

Of course, unbeknownst to her stepmother and stepsisters, Cissie had a 3-D printer hidden in her room.

When she found out the bit about the shoe on the steps and the Handsome Hunk with a foot fettish making the rounds, she programmed her printer.

And lo and behold out came the matching shoe.

EMCEE 1

When the Handsome Hunk showed up at her door, she greeted him with her pair of kicks, and he knew he had found the real deal.

Ultimately, Cissie became CEO of her own tech company and was so successful she was able to fund scholarships to HBCU’s.

EMCEE 2

She sold the rights to her story to Rhonda Holt at Turner Broadcasting System for a made-for-TV Netflix series and continues to get royalties to this day.

EMCEE 1

And that is what we call a STEM Fairy Tale: The Power of STEM Sisters.

Now, Ladies and Gentlemen, please enjoy your dinner.
